Chris Slabber's "Found": A Microscopic Journey into Art

Unveiling the Hidden Beauty in Mundane Spaces through Abstract Expressionism

Chris Slabber, an award-winning designer, has embarked on an artistic journey to reveal the hidden beauty in the most unlikely places. His project, "Found," is a series of abstract expressionist pieces created from microscopic photographs of mundane spaces, serving as a meditative aid for self-reflection.

Slabber's inspiration for "Found" stemmed from his personal struggle with anxiety. He found solace in quiet spaces, visualizing symmetrical patterns to regain balance. This led him to explore his studio space, focusing on the overlooked areas such as the gaps between floorboards and beneath carpets. His curiosity led him to discover a world unseen by the naked eye, a world of intricate patterns and textures that formed the basis of his project.

Each piece in "Found" was created by photographing corresponding elements using a digital microscope. Slabber studied the different textures of each element, juxtaposing selected series of photographs to create individual masks or faces for each element. The final compositions, measuring 297 x 297 mm, were designed to serve as a meditative aid, inviting viewers to gaze into the depths of each piece for self-reflection.

The project, which began in December 2018 and concluded in February 2019, was conducted in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. Slabber faced several challenges during the process, including selecting the series of photos for each composition and ensuring the initial lighting of each photograph made sense in the final composition. Despite the low-quality images produced by the microscope, Slabber managed to treat the images in Photoshop to ensure optimal viewing quality.

"Found" is a testament to Slabber's belief that beauty can be found in the least likely of places. The project encourages viewers to open their minds and perceive random objects as more than what they appear to be. The designs, while recognizably symmetrical, are meant to be viewed as abstract expressionism, evoking emotional experiences and allowing viewers to face mental obstacles or simply relax in a neutral state of mind.

The project was recognized with a Platinum A' Photography and Photo Manipulation Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology. Slabber's "Found" certainly fits the bill, showcasing his professional genius and commitment to making the world a better place through art.
